The Altai's greatest gathering

Every October, the Kazakh community of Bayan-Ulgii holds the largest Golden Eagle Festival in Mongolia — two decades of tradition kept alive almost exactly as it began. Hunters ride in from across the province with their eagles to compete, and for two full days the field belongs to horsemanship, falconry and pure Altai spectacle.

Ulgii sits about 1,600 km west of Ulaanbaatar, so we fly both ways — you spend your time at the festival, not on the road. You'll watch and photograph the competitions up close, then step into an eagle hunter's home to meet the birds and the families who raise them.

A soft-paced trip built around one unforgettable event — good for photographers, families and first-time visitors alike.

The Golden Eagle Festival

The festival opens with a parade of hunters in full fur regalia, riding in with their eagles held high — up to sixty of them. Across two full days you'll watch the eagles called down from the hills, judged on speed, agility and obedience, alongside horseback games and Kazakh customs. Plenty of time to photograph and take it all in.
